After President Trump recently referred to a judge who displeased him as an “Obama judge,” U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts issued a rare public rebuke of the President:
“We do not have Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges,” Roberts said. “What we have is an extraordinary group of dedicated judges doing their level best to do equal right to those appearing before them.” [Emphasis added.]
The federal district court judge had just issued a ruling blocking an administration’s policy. No news in that.
Trump sneered in response by tweeting out that the judge was nothing more than an Obama judge. No news in that either.
But a U.S. Supreme Court chief justice publicly taking a sitting president to task definitely is news. So, perhaps, is the timing Chief Justice Roberts chose to do so.
So why did Chief Justice Roberts choose this particular moment to speak out?
Could it be more than coincidence that he did so virtually simultaneously with the launch of the pre-order campaign for this writer’s Brooks/Lotello thriller novel, The Puppet Master? Which you can see here.
More specifically, could it be that Chief Justice Roberts read the advance reviewer copy of The Puppet Master and had focused on trial court judge Cyrus Brooks’s expressed self-doubt about his ability to “do equal right to those appearing before him”? You can decide for yourself. Brooks did publicly speak of “equal right” before Roberts did.

Am I deluded? Hardly! At least I don’t think I am. Apart from sometimes thinking of myself as a standup comedian! However, people (other than The Wife and I) are anxiously awaiting the anticipated December 11 release of The Puppet Master, prequel to The Amendment Killer, the highly acclaimed first in the Brooks/Lotello political/legal thriller series.
