Five star reviews are often inflated. Not this time. By any criteria, THE FOURTH MONKEY deserves five stars. When I see a novel that does, I like to shout it out to my reading community:

First, for me, the characters. Sam Porter is a great protagonist. Like Lee Child’s Jack Reacher, characters as terrific as Porter are quite few and far between. The 4MK killer takes no back seat to Thomas Harris’s Hannibal Lecter. To have two adversaries of such a high caliber in the same work is a rare feat. And a rare treat.

Then the story arc and its presentation, which I combine so I don’t have to quit my day job to sing J.D. Barker’s praises! The writing is vivid, making it so easy for the reader to “see” this clever story unfold. Right before your very eyes. The voice is great; characters good and bad interact so effortlessly, so realistically, and so well.

Barker is an outstanding new writer. He will be read and reread. Deservedly so.
