Under the capable auspices of Karen Dionne and Kelly Meister, The Wife and I and a handful of other privileged writing students spent the past week at the Salt Cay Writers Retreat in The Bahamas, being counseled by the likes of bestselling authors Lee Child, Ann Hood and Karen Dionne and preeminent literary agents Jeff Kleinman, Erin Niumata and Erin Harris of Folio Literary Management. From the craft of writing to the business of writing, this was a great week of learning and bonding.
The experience reminded me of yet another instance of effective counseling recently brought to my attention. As a desperate woman stood poised on the edge of a high cliff about to jump, a grungy tramp approached the woman and said, “Look, since you’ll be dead in a few minutes and it won’t matter to you, how about having a little sex with me before you go?” She angrily responded, “No way! Get lost!” He shrugged and turned away, saying, “No worries, I’ll just climb down and wait for you at the bottom.” She didn’t jump.
Never underestimate the value of strong, effective, quality counseling.
