Last May, The Wife and I attended a luncheon hosted by mom and daughter Barbara and Dana Davis to kick off their 2016 Children’s Diabetes Foundation’s annual Carousel of Hope fundraising black tie dinner affair benefitting children’s diabetes research, a cause that the Davis family has been championing for some forty years now, since Dana was first diagnosed with diabetes.
On October 8, the gala event was held in Beverly Hills and it was no disappointment. Literally thousands of benefactors turned out to support the cause and to pay homage to the royal family of diabetes philanthropy. Spearheaded by the Davises, CDF and its legions have raised hundreds of millions of dollars in pursuit of taming this insidious beast, the ultimate cure for which is now within our grasp with the soon to be available artificial pancreas. It was The Wife’s and my privilege and pleasure to bear witness to the evening’s festivities.
Barbara shows no signs of surrendering the mantle, at least not before the artificial pancreas is a fait accompli, but Dana, now the CEO of CDF, is a chip off the old block, and an Exhibit A poster child illustration that diabetes never need hold anyone back from living a full and productive life.
It’s no small wonder that a complete stranger, @GurdieCorell, before the gala was hardly concluded, chose to “like” on Twitter the blog and tweet I did on CDF and the Davises all the way back in May:
“@AuthorGurdieCorell liked the following tweet: ‘RonBarakAuthor: Lunching with royalty @Bdaviscenter, @Danadavisshoes, @chldrnsdiabetes, #CarouselofHope, #diabetes.'”
